TOP 5 WEDNESDAY | 20.MAY.2015 | DEBUT NOVELS

This week's Top 5 Wednesday topic is Debut Novels! I totally thought this was going to be a hard one, but it turns out some of my favorite books are debut novels.... and here they are:

5. Divergent by Veronica Roth

I had no idea this was her debut novel. I am way late to the Divergent train (haha) but I could not put this down. I really loved the writing and all the characters. Tris is a great female protagonist. I really enjoyed her character development. While I did not enjoy the other books nearly as much, this one stuck with me and I loved everything about it.

4. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

I completely thought I was going to hate it. It's a gaming book and I'm not a gamer, unless you count flappy bird on my iPhone! I was completely taken by this novel just could not stop reading it. Wade's story and his adventures throughout this novel really grabbed me and kept my attention. I needed to know what was going to happen next.

3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer

This is a Cinderella re-telling (if you couldn't tell by the title and the cover). It is Marissa Meyer's debut novel and it was so good! I did not give it a 5 star rating as I wasn't really prepared for what this book had to offer. By the end of it, it just made me feel all the girl power feels. Cinder is a bad ass character and I love bad ass characters! It's a sci-fi take on the classic story and as things are totally different, you still get the Cinderella vibe and I really enjoyed reading this story and I continued through the entire series... just waiting for Winter now. The books get better as you go!

My Review • Goodreads • Barnes & Noble • Book Depository • Amazon

2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

There are no words to describe how precious this novel is. I loved this beautiful thing from start to finish. I still think about it to this day. Charlie is just the sweetest kid just trying to find his place while dealing with things no one should ever endure. It was amazing. There is a beauty about this novel that just can't be put into words.

1. The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

It's a gem. It's a tragic story told in such a magical and beautiful way. The story is as unique as it's title. The protagonist Ava Lavender doesn't even exist until quite a ways into the story. We learn about the women in her family starting with her great grandmother and all the tragic loves up until Ava is born, with WINGS! This story introduced me to magical realism, which is probably now my favorite genre. I absolutely love this story and encourage everyone I come across to read it.

  1. Great picks, Martha! Totally agree with Perks. I forgot about that one. (Side note: one of the few times a movie adaptation totally got it right.) And Cinder has been on my TBR for SO long. I really need to read that one soon.
