Synopsis
Charlie is a freshman.
And while he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means
popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his year yet socially
awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and
trying to run from it. Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through
uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix tapes, family
dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror
Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect
drive to feel infinite. But he can't stay on the sidelines forever.
Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there
comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to
those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.My Review
Read. This. Book. I don't know what the hell I waited so long for. I am grateful that I also had not seen the movie yet. When I decided to pick this one up every person I know who has read or seen the movie just plainly said it was an all time favorite. I was blown away. The deep issues and the light hearted-ness of the book was fucking spectacular. I can't even put into words what this book now means to me. Every teenager goes through hard times and just tries so hard to get it right. Charlie's story is unique in what he learns about himself, but it is such an honest story. I don't want to give anything away. I was lucky enough to go into the book knowing basically nothing about the story. It's a short one, but jam packed with everything. I appreciate Charlie's character, he's a special kid for sure.
After reading this book, I ended up in the biggest reading slump because I couldn't get it out of my mind. I thought about Charlie, about Sam and Patrick. It reminded me of the days when life was so hard, but yet so simple. Being a teenager is hard, and being a teenager dealing with some of the things discussed in the book is harder. The story was beautiful, Charlie is beautiful! They all are really. This story just took my heart an ran. One of my all time favorites.... and the movie was written and produced by the Author Stephen Chbosky and was so true to the story. I'm in love with it.
Go read this, if you were a teenager, if you have a teenager... whatever! There is some heavy-hitting issues in the story, but it is so tastefully done and you really appreciate where it takes you. I was lost in it, I still am. EPIC!
