Synopsis
In the ruins of a place
once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, the shining
Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh
and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and
one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the
annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-- and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
My Review
First off, I want to say that Katniss is a KICK ASS girl. You follow her through her struggle with life and love and this journey and fight that is The Hunger Games. I can't believe what a strong person she is. She defies the odds for sure. First we meet Katniss as she tells us what her daily life is like. We see the sacrifices she makes to take care of her sister and her mother. We find out that her father has died and she's the sole caretaker of the family because her mother is mentally unstable and basically checked out due to the depression of losing her husband. At the Reaping, where they pick the kids chosen to fight in the Hunger Games she volunteers to take her sister's place, in true Katniss fashion, she protects what she loves and will do anything to save them.
We go to the games with her, we see the smart, whitty girl that she is. We learn how her mind works and how she makes crucial decisions. The love story in this book is basic, and perfect. I don't want to give anything away, but it's just great. I really enjoyed the adventure this book took me on. I'm already starting the second book in the series.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for some great, strong female leads. Katniss is such a great protagonist. Very strong minded and good willed. I also would recommend this to anyone that likes a good survival story, because that what this is about. Survival.
