Synopsis
When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.
Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.
Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.
My Review
I'm just gonna start this off by saying, these are my personal opinions. I DO NOT support rape, or sexual abuse in any way. This book is about two consensual adults having an adult relationship and doing adult things. What people do in the bedroom is their business and I judge no one for their preferences, neither should you. and KEEP IN MIND these are FICTIONAL characters! Now for my review....
This book SUCKED! and it wasn't even the sex that was bad, that was actually pretty interesting to read about and you see the underlying psychological reasons for Christian Grey's preferences, which is the most interesting part of the book. I didn't like it because Christian Grey is CLEARLY Edward Cullen. I didn't know much about this book other than the BDSM aspect and that it happened to be some kind of twilight fan fiction, but stuff was changed. Christian is 100 % Edward. There was nothing about his that was unique other than the fact that he wasn't a vampire.
I didn't like this book because it portrayed a very unhealthy relationship between two people, although I will say the ending really starts to clear that up, they are working through a problem that Mr. Grey has. Everyone has baggage, I was glad to see that things were coming to light and that it seems to me the next books in the series will be clearing up.
And the thing that made me most uncomfortable is the whole "inner goddess" and "subconscious" dialogue... every time, I rolled my eyes!
The sex in the book was very graphic. I'm a 30 year old woman, so it really didn't make me uncomfortable to read about. It just looked like a man had "particular" interests and a woman wanted to experience it with him, because she loved him, and he gave into her requests as well. People need to cool it with the "Dom/Sub" part of the book, because honestly Anastasia is kind of holding her own throughout the book, aside from the "I can't live without him" tendencies, she's got a mind of her own and I feel like she really thought through things, and made demands of her own. Besides, what do you do when you're in love with someone? You try to make them happy? I felt Christian tried to make her happy too. Either way, these are two adults, doing what they want. He gave her an "out" throughout the entire story.
Both of these characters are extremely flawed. Christian with this childhood issues and Anastasia being a weak and insecure woman. In Twilight, at least Bella was a hormonal teenager (we all feel crazy at 16) but Anastasia is a grown ass woman! It kills me to see how obsessed they become with each other. It's very disappointing. This was such an unhealthy relationship, but I find myself not trying to focus on that because it's a very honest story. Aside from the shitty writing, none of us are born perfect and we all suffer some sort of struggle throughout our lives, and it's kind of refreshing to see a book explore some pretty fucked up people.
Anyway, this book was VERY poorly written. It screamed Twilight to me, so it didn't feel like an original story AT ALL! So I have it one star, because the Author put some kind of work into this novel, and another because I like where it might be going the next book. I'm going to continue reading, hopefully the writing gets better (which I hear it does). Hopefully no one screams and yells at me in all caps for my personal opinions about this book.
