"If my love were an ocean,- Jay Asher (Thirteen Reasons Why)
there would be no more land.
If my love were a desert,

If my love were a star-

And if my love could grow wings,
I'd be soaring in flight."

My Review
Today my book review will be on “Th1rteen R3asons Why” by Jay Asher. I came across this amazing piece of work while I was online searching for something new to read. I read for most of my high school years, a lot. In the recent years I’ve found myself lost in work, my kids, my home, etc. The last few months I’ve really taken the time to sit down and get back to doing some of the things that make me happy… and one of those things is getting lost in a story. This book did just that for me. I read it in less than 24 hours! It’s captivating, it’s a little creepy, but after the first 2 chapters you really feel the essence of this book.
The book starts off with one of the main characters Clay, dropping off a box at the post office that changed his entire life. He had a crush on a girl named Hannah Baker. A girl who recently committed suicide and he just couldn’t get her out of his mind since, or even a little before she was gone. Hannah had a hard time in high school, she struggled with the typical teenage things, but she lost herself along the way. She was in pain and she hid it quite well. She used her last few days to record some cassette tapes and each side of each tape was dedicated to 1 person who helped her make the unthinkable decision to kill herself, and yes you guessed it… there are 13 people. The story takes you through each instance that snowballed into Hannah feeling like she just couldn’t go on with her life. I don’t want to give too much away, but the moral of the story is simple. Kindness! You never know what the people you come across everyday are battling within themselves, just be kind.
This book is well written! The idea of her telling her story after she was gone was genius. Not many people who commit suicide get to lay those details out for the world to see. Jay Asher really took me away with this book and I just couldn’t stop reading it. It is captivating, eye-opening and life-changing. I felt like I had a new perspective and a renewed sense of how I speak to and treat others.
While reading this book I got to see the perspective of a person who was struggling within herself. I’ve struggled like that, my outcome was different, but people deal with their struggles differently. This book really opened my eyes, it changed my heart. Although it is a sad story, it definitely teaches a strong lesson. Something I already live by, but now I feel it is important to ask others to practice kindness. There are some awful people in this world, and even they need to be shown kindness… Like I said before, you never know how people are struggling and what they are doing to deal with it. Some might be mean to others to make themselves feel superior because inside they feel inferior. Some might hide, keep quiet and to themselves. Some might try and ignore it and pretend to be happy. Whatever the deal is, being kind to them will never be a bad thing, and who knows it might change them a little too.
Go read it! I have to say this was such a refreshing book. The concept is simple, be kind! The story itself is heart-breaking and eye-opening. Definitely one I will recommend to anyone.
